Geothermal
At first glance, most people visiting this site in search of energy alternatives probably would skip past 'geothermal'. Sounds too scientific or engineering, too big. But think about it: our early ancestors who survived the Ice Age huddled in caves. Caves!? Why? Because caves were warmed by the earth, and hovered around a survivable 45 Degrees (the same reason a basement is cool in summer, and relatively warm in winter). Geothermal energy sources for consumers is now viable. An increasing number of homes in the northern latitudes now use geothermal principles in the design/excavation fo the house, but also use the earth as a source for heat pumps and air conditioners.
